<image:title>Publications - Unveiling the complex configurational landscape of the intralayer cavities in a crystalline carbon nitride</image:title>
<image:caption>The in-depth understanding of the reported photoelectrochemical properties of the layered carbon nitride, poly(triazine imide)/LiCl (PTI/LiCl), has been limited by the apparent disorder of the Li/H atoms within its framework. To understand and resolve the current structural ambiguities, an optimized one-step flux synthesis (470 °C, 36 h, LiCl/KCl flux) was used to prepare PTI/LiCl and deuterated-PTI/LiCl in high purity. Its structure was characterized by a combination of neutron/X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The range of possible Li/H atomic configurations was enumerated for the first time and, combined with total energy calculations, reveals a more complex energetic landscape than previously considered. Experimental data were fitted against all possible structural models, exhibiting the most consistency with a new orthorhombic model (Sp. Grp. Ama2) that also has the lowest total energy. In addition, a new Cu(I)-containing PTI (PTI/CuCl) was prepared with the more strongly scattering Cu(I) cations in place of Li, and most closely matching with the partially-disorder structure in Cmc21. Thus, a complex configurational landscape of PTI is revealed to consist of a number of ordered crystalline structures that are new potential synthetic targets, such as with the use of metal-exchange reactions. <image:caption>Jim Cahoon’s research program is focused on the chemical synthesis of semiconductor nanomaterials with unique physical properties that can enable a range of technologies, from solar cells to solid-state memory. His Ph.D. background is in experimental physical chemistry, and my post-doctoral training focused on nanomaterial synthesis, a topic at the border of physical chemistry, inorganic materials, and engineering. At UNC, Jim has combined these backgrounds to develop a research program that emphasizes nanomaterials synthesis coupled with detailed physical characterization and computational modeling. By combining these three key areas - synthesis, measurement, and modeling - they have a general strategy to develop new materials with specific properties and function under the overarching theme "morphology encodes function." Because the materials they develop have dimensions on the nanometer length scale, subtle changes in size, geometry, and composition have profound influence on the optical and electrical characteristics of the materials; thus, they use morphology as a tool to rationally encode specific physical properties, which they predict and model through computation.</image:caption>

The long term goal of most projects is to develop homogeneous transition metal catalysts for chemical transformations, which could result in the development of more energy efficient and affordable industrial processes. Furthermore, we believe that it is important to understand reaction mechanisms, as this can play a crucial role in improving catalysts. He was a post-doctoral fellow at the University of California, Berkeley. He has been a professor at Emory University since 1996. <image:caption>The Lockett lab develops new analytical tools to study chemical phenomena occurring in complex biological and chemical systems—with a general focus on oxygen-regulated cellular signaling in tissues and electron transport at disordered interfaces on chemically modified electrodes. These models afford us exquisite experimental control, enabling structure-function relationships for small numbers of variables. We use these systems to build an overall understanding of the system through continued study, one hypothesis at a time. Our intellectual pursuits are not driven by a single measurement technique or approach but rather by adopting or adapting techniques that provide high sensitivity and accuracy.</image:caption>

In particular, bio-inspired photonic structures for organic photovoltaics, dye sensitized solar cells, sensors and electro-chromic materials. The Lopez group's interest focuses at the intersection between electromagnetic radiation and nanostructured materials. Beyond its well established footprint in telecommunications, the physics of light manipulation and control with/within nanoscale materials is nowadays a rendezvous point for solar energy harvesting, chemical sensors, and photonic structures with a variety of applications.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Principal Investigators - James Mayer - Professor James Mayer</image:title>
<image:caption>Research in the Mayer group spans the fields of inorganic, materials, bioinorganic, organometallic, and physical organic chemistry. Our primary focus is on redox reactions that involve bond formation and bond cleavage, in particular the coupled transfers of protons and electrons. Proton/electron transfers are central to a variety of important processes, from fuel cells and solar fuels to bioenergetics, from organic free radical reactions and reactive oxygen species to enzymatic oxidations, and from the properties of nanoscale metal oxides to interfacial charge transfer. One aspect of our work is developing fundamental descriptions of the different classes of proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) reactions. We have shown, for instance, that hydrogen atom transfers are typically well described by a model based on Marcus Theory. Studies of photo-induced PCET in phenol derivatives are probing reactions near the barrierless limit. Transition metal complexes are being synthesized with separated redox and acid/base sites, to probe the effect of separating the H⁺ and e⁻,as models for biological PCET processes. PCET principles are being applied to the development and study of electrocatalysts for small molecule transformations, such as O₂ + 4H⁺ + 4e⁻ → 2H₂O, which is key to fuel cell and solar fuel technologies. The Mayer group has recently shown that PCET is also a key concept in materials chemistry and interfacial charge transfer reactions.</image:caption>

Meyer he joined the faculty at Johns Hopkins University and later moved to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he is now a Professor of Chemistry and Director of CHASE. Research in the Meyer lab concerns experimental investigations of excited-state transition metal compounds that drive subsequent electron- or energy-transfer reactions in fluid solution and at semiconductor interfaces. In particular we utilize compounds based on Ru, Cu, Co, Pt, Os, and organic compounds anchored to wide band gap semiconductors based on metal oxides such as anatase TiO₂, ZrO₂, and SnO₂. Practical applications include light-to-electrical energy conversion, chemical sensing, and photo-catalysis. The Stach lab utilizes advanced characterization techniques – primarily electron and ion microscopy – to correlate the atomic, nano- and mesoscale structure of materials to their processing conditions, their fundamental properties and their overall performance. Their work centers around the development of novel in-situ and operando methods. With these approaches they use microscopes to obtain imaging, diffraction and spectroscopy data from materials in their native environments, preferably as they function. In particular, operando (“in a working condition”) experiments allow direct links between structure, processing, properties and performance in an explicit way, making this approach extremely powerful.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Bev joined CHASE as the Research Program Administrative Coordinator in October 2025. Prior to joining CHASE, Bev served as the Program Coordinator for the Master’s Program in Biomedical Engineering at Duke University from 2015 to 2025. She relocated to North Carolina in 2015 from Cornell University, where she held several administrative roles over the years. From 2006 to 2015, she was the Purchasing and Risk Liaison for the Division of Nutritional Sciences. Prior to that, from 2003 to 2006, she served as the Administrative Supervisor overseeing faculty support staff for the Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. One fun fact about me is Bev is that she has a passion for graveyard and cemetery care and management. She has a small business to clean and maintain gravestones and has done record management for small towns who need help with updating their records.</image:caption>

Within CHANL, Carrie is responsible for instruments including XPS, XRD, FTIR, microspectrophotometry, AFM-IR, and ESEM. Since 2013, she has trained more than 550 users on these tools. Moreover, in the last year alone, she has provided trainings and technical guidance for 61 research groups and 112 users.
